Born in Hungary, Juli Beattie came to England as a child refugee in 1956. Trained as a teacher, she has spent 40 years working as a therapeutic educator in mainstream and specialist schools and hospitals, including Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 2002, Juli founded the charity The Art Room in Oxford to offer a therapeutic intervention to children with complex needs, designed to enhance their self-esteem and independence and avoid exclusion from mainstream schools. Juli established, developed and successfully delivered the Beattie Methodology over the course of 15 years at the Art Room, as well as directing the charity and expanding its reach so that it is now a national charity. Juli stepped down in December 2016 to write, and to set up AT The Bus. In addition to her current role as Founder and Creative Director of AT The Bus, Juli works as an adviser and training consultant for a therapeutic arts project in Switzerland. She works in an advisory capacity to other education and therapeutic organisations. Juli was awarded an honorary doctorate from Bath Spa University in 2015 for her outstanding contribution to the arts and education. She was awarded an OBE in 2016 in recognition of her contribution to the welfare and education of young people.
